70-82 AD--Roman--Roman Colosseum (Flavian Amphitheatre)--it was nicknamed the Colosseum because Nero had a colossus of himself installed in this area--the statue was removed later, but the name stayed. Here is a view of the staging areas and animal cages which were once concealed beneath the floor.
