Description

ca. 1460 AD--Northern European--Depiction of the Martyrdom of St. Apollonia--of particular interest are the mansions in the background, which suggest the sort of performance space and form this genre took. The actors from each mansion would stay on their mansions until it was their turn to perform, and then they would descend and play in the middle area. This pattern would develop further into moving mansions/pageant wagons. This depiction is by Jean Fouquet, a medieval artist.
