Description
1493--Italian--Performance of Andria, by Terence (the Roman comedian, not Schoone-Jongen). A discovery in 1427 of a manuscript containing the plays of Plautus and Terence led to attempts, like the one here, to present these and other classical plays in what was thought to be their original manner (based on interpretations of Vitruvius' descriptions). Thus, we have this stage attempting to emulate the Roman stage. As you may note from the architecture of the theatres of the time, there was a big move to emulate the Roman stage.
