1793-1873--English--William Charles Macready--as Iago--He later turned to management, and was successful and innovative. He was one of the first "modern" directors, and he did not "save himself" for performances but insisted on real rehearsals, as well as historical accuracy. He restored many of Shakespeare's scripts. He was also a bitter rival of Edwin Forrest--one of his performances on an American tour sparked a riot.
